Earlier in the year our Year 10 students selected their pathways heading into Year 11 & 12 from 2020. This year we had 23 students who went into work experience placements, whist the ATAR bound students attended their transition here at the College.
Part of the transition period was for students to attend a work placement best suited to their certificate qualification/s or Curtin Uni-Ready program ahead of Year 11 & 12. Students got to experience a block placement period from the 5th–13th December at a host employer. Students were exposed to the daily running of their chosen industry area, some having to attend 5 am pre-starts.
Students worked closely with their supervisor’s assisting with daily tasks and familiarising themselves with the working environment. I visited students whilst at their placement and received very positive feedback from both host employers and students. Students were able to conduct themselves on a professional level, displaying maturity, time management, independence and not being afraid to get involved. The opportunity has opened future work placements for students whether they choose a School-Based Traineeship, Pre-Apprenticeship, Online Study, or attending TAFE one day a week towards a recognised qualification.
Work placements provide an opportunity for students to build on their exposure within a particular industry area gaining ‘hands on, on the job’ training. It creates links to industry and closes the gap between high school and the ‘world of work’.
As education and the workforce shifts its direction to equally recognising and preparing University bound students and traineeship/apprenticeships, more opportunities are becoming available to suit each graduating student’s future career pathway.
I would like to acknowledge and thank our host employers from our local industry areas for supporting our students through their transition work placements. We look forward to their continued support. They are:
