St Luke’s College is one of UWA’s Aspire schools. UWA Aspire works with schools and communities in regional WA to raise aspirations for tertiary education. They encourage students who would not normally consider university to see the benefits and opportunities that university study offers.
Selected Year 11 students were fortunate to attend the UWA Aspire Camp held in Perth. Students mixed with other students from various regional schools, they shared dormitories at Point Walter Camp School and participated in a variety of arranged workshops and Industry visits. It involved students getting out of their ‘comfort zone’ and engaging with others.
Students engaged in teambuilding workshops such as; people bingo, problem solving skills, improving resilience, and study skills. Students got involved with UWA students in the more interactive workshops such as learning a dance routine with the UWA dance crew, star gazing with the ICRAR team and night photography.
A variety of arranged UWA campus visits provided students with more information around the different faculty areas, including Law, Neurosciences, Arts and Sports & Recreation. Industry visits opened a whole new experience, visits to Jackson McDonald Law Firm, Wood & Grieve Engineering, Watercorp and BHP. Students captured the holistic view of the meaning of studying at university and the transition into the workforce.
