On Tuesday, 2 July, thirty St Luke’s students across all year groups travelled to Roebourne to participate in the NAIDOC Basketball Tournament.
We started the event with a traditional Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by the Roebourne Elders. It was a powerful ceremony which initiated the start of NAIDOC celebrations for our students over the next few weeks.
On the court, whilst our girls didn’t quite get a victory on the board, they did come very close in a couple of games against some much older competitors. After a couple of huge semi-finals, our two boys teams both made it through to the Grand Final against each other. In a game where the lead changed several times, our “A team” (mostly Year 10-12s), eventually pipped our “B team” of Year 7-10s. End score 24 – 20. Jason Loveday (Year 12) was awarded the overall MVP of the boys competition.
What really shined during the day was the comradery amongst our students. Staff and spectators commented on the way St Luke’s students conducted themselves; to see Year 10 boys picking up smaller Year 7s, the encouragement they gave each other and the way they celebrated each other’s successes.
Congratulations to all students who participated in the tournament, you have certainly done St Luke’s proud!
