Red Earth Arts Festival – Year 7 Drama

Last night, our Year 7 Drama students attended the Red Earth Arts Festival to display their wonderful puppet creations for the Ngurra Nyujunggamu – When The World Was Soft project. The students worked very hard to complete these in time, and they were a great success! Students were able to join many other schools and communities who participated in the puppetry workshops through an artistic display of imagination and creativity. The puppets looked magical against our beautiful Pilbara landscape, bringing the puppets to life!

The past few weeks we have had Spectacle Puppetry Artist Karen Hethey and many members of the Juluwarlu group join our classes to guide students in creating their very own large-scale bird puppets. This was a huge project which included learning about local creation stories from Indigenous elders and designing puppets inspired by Yindjibarndi culture. Students spent many weeks creating their puppets using cane bending, taping, intricate mechanisms, painting, paper mache and hot gluing.

We would like to thank Karen, the City of Karratha and the Juluwarlu group for their time and expertise throughout the project. We hope to be involved in future exciting events!
