Drama classes have started with a bang this term!

Our Year 7 Drama students have been joined by professional Spectacle Puppetry Artist, Karen Hethey, in a creative adventure to make their very own large-scale bird puppet. The program is part of the Ngurra Nyujunggamu – When The World Was Soft project for the Red Earth Arts Festival 2022, with students invited to be a part of the festival’s opening in a few weeks’ time.

The six-week program started by learning about local creation stories, with students beginning to design their puppets inspired by Yindjibarndi culture. Students have now started exploring their inner puppeteer by learning how to use simple techniques in cane bending, paper mache, and basic mechanism design to make a fantastic puppet to bring to life with just a bit of imagination.
We are now half-way through the program and the birds are beginning to take shape!

We would like to thank puppetry artist Karen Hethey, the City of Karratha and the Ganalili Centre for their time and expertise so far.
